THE LIGHT JOURNAL · USING YOUR MASK · 6 MIN READ
You already have a cleanser, a moisturizer you like, and possibly a serum or two. Adding an LED mask shouldn't mean starting your whole routine again.
The question is where to put it. Before your serum? After your moisturizer? And what happens on the nights you use retinol?
Here is a straightforward way to think about the order, with LORYN's instructions as the starting point.
Should you use an LED mask before or after skincare? For LORYN, use the mask on clean, dry skin after cleansing and before applying your skincare. Complete the instructed session with the supplied eye protection, then apply products suitable for your skin. If you own another mask, follow its manual: product compatibility and preparation instructions can differ.
Where an LED mask goes in your routine
The LORYN Red Light Therapy Mask fits between washing your face and applying your usual products. You can keep the rest of the routine familiar.
- Cleanse. Remove makeup, sunscreen, and other products, then gently dry your skin.
- Use the mask as directed. Position the supplied eye protectors and adjust the straps according to the manual. Choose your instructed mode and session length.
- Apply your skincare. Follow with suitable products you already tolerate, such as your usual moisturizer. If you use a serum, follow its directions.
- Finish your morning routine with sun protection. An LED mask doesn't replace sunscreen.
You don't have to add several new products to make this feel like a proper routine. Getting comfortable with one new step is enough to begin with.
Should serum go before or after an LED mask?
For LORYN, save your serum until after the session. That follows the clean, dry skin guidance on our product page and keeps preparation simple.
You may see other brands recommending a particular serum or hydrogel alongside their device. Treat that as advice for that combination, rather than permission to put any product underneath any mask.
The ingredient name alone won't answer every compatibility question. A hyaluronic acid serum, for example, is still a complete formula with other ingredients. If you want to use a specific product with your mask, check the instructions for both.
There is also no need to assume that adding a serum underneath will improve the treatment. Start with the way the device is intended to be used.
Can you use moisturizer after an LED mask?
Yes, LORYN's guidance places skincare after the mask. A moisturizer that already suits your skin is a simple way to finish.
If your evening routine was previously cleansing followed by moisturizer, it can become cleansing, your planned LED session, then moisturizer. You don't need to turn it into six steps.
If a session leaves your skin painful, burning, or noticeably irritated, stop using the device and seek advice rather than trying to cover the reaction with more products. The American Academy of Dermatology's red-light guidance notes that irritation can occur and recommends checking whether home light therapy is appropriate for you.
What if you use retinol, acids, or prescription skincare?
This is where a general order-of-steps guide needs to leave room for the actual products you use.
Retinol and prescription retinoids aren't interchangeable, and their formulas and strengths vary. The AAD's guide to retinol and retinoids explains that they can cause irritation and that suitability depends on your skin.
For LORYN, keep products off your face during the session. If you use retinol, exfoliating acids, prescription treatments, or medication that may increase light sensitivity, check the device instructions and ask your dermatologist or prescriber about combining them.
Putting a product on afterward doesn't automatically make the combination suitable. Nor does moving it to a different night resolve every restriction. Bring the product name and your mask details to the conversation so the advice applies to what you actually own.
You don't need to change a prescribed treatment to make room for a beauty device. Get guidance on where, or whether, the mask fits alongside it.
Is it better to use an LED mask in the morning or at night?
For planning your routine, start with the time you can comfortably make available. Don't assume a particular hour will improve your results unless the device instructions give you a reason to use it then.
If mornings suit you
Use your planned session after cleansing and drying your face, then continue with skincare and sunscreen. Leave enough time that you aren't rushing to adjust the mask while getting ready to go out.
For sun protection, the AAD recommends broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, alongside other sun-protective measures. Your mask doesn't change that advice.
If evenings suit you
Remove the day's makeup and sunscreen, cleanse, and dry your skin. Fit the mask, complete the instructed session, then finish with your suitable skincare.
Choose a point in the evening when you're still awake enough to follow the instructions. Listening to a podcast while seated can give the time a place in your evening without needing another task to do.
You don't need a session in both routines. Choose a time that works with the usage schedule in your manual.
How often should the mask be part of your routine?
Use the schedule for your specific device and mode. A routine you saw online may involve different wavelengths, output, or instructions.
The AAD emphasizes regular use according to the device directions and realistic expectations. Results take time and vary. A ten-minute session length is not, by itself, an instruction to repeat the treatment every day or run several modes back to back.
LORYN's controller has a ten-minute timer per mode. Follow the included instructions for your treatment schedule. Allow a little extra time for preparation and cleaning so you know what you're adding to your day.
Our guide to how long an LED mask takes to work covers the results timeline separately. For now, the useful goal is to understand the routine before you decide whether it suits you.
Keep the first few weeks easy to follow
Try to avoid changing your cleanser, serum, moisturizer, and device all at once. Keeping the familiar parts of your routine steady makes it easier to notice how a new addition suits you.
Before each planned session, have the mask, controller, and eye protectors ready. Afterward, clean and store the device as directed. A reminder on your phone is enough if remembering sessions is the difficult part.
If fitting it feels fiddly, spend a little time on the strap adjustment before switching it on. Our guide to LED mask comfort and fit explains what to look for, including the purpose of the extra top strap.
The routine should be clear enough that you aren't searching for a new set of instructions every evening.
Considering a mask for your own routine?

Common questions about LED masks and skincare
Can I use an LED mask over makeup?
For LORYN, remove makeup and begin with clean, dry skin. Apply skincare after the session.
Do I need to buy a special serum?
LORYN's routine starts with clean, dry skin, so a serum underneath is not part of that preparation. You can use suitable skincare afterward.
Can I use vitamin C after my LED mask?
LORYN places skincare after the session, but that doesn't confirm compatibility with every vitamin C formula. Check your product's directions and device manual, and get advice if you're unsure or your skin is irritated.
Should I wash my face again afterward?
LORYN's published order is clean, dry skin, the mask, then skincare; it doesn't add a second cleanse. Follow any additional care instructions in your manual.
