Red Light Therapy Masks vs Panels: What Actually Reaches Your Face

This comparison is almost always written by people who sell panels. Here is the arithmetic, including the parts that favour them.

Panels produce far more light than masks and can treat the whole body. For the face specifically the gap narrows sharply, because panel irradiance is usually quoted at a distance closer than people actually sit, and independent testing has found published panel figures running well below their claims. A panel is the better buy if you want to treat more than your face. A mask is the better buy if you will not otherwise sit still.


Who writes this comparison, and why it matters

If you search this question, almost everything on the first page is published by a company that sells panels. The conclusions are remarkably consistent: panels offer more total energy in less time, panels are the better single-device investment, panels are the clear choice.

We sell a mask, so you should apply exactly the same discount to us. What we can do instead of asking you to trust anyone is show the arithmetic, cite the sources, and include the parts that do not flatter us. There are several.

The most useful outside voice we found was a dermatologist quoted in a consumer piece rather than a product page, who observed that consistency matters more than the device and that patients using either one regularly tend to do best. [1] That is closer to the truth than anything either industry publishes about itself.


What panels are genuinely better at

Starting here because it is the honest place to start.

  • Everything below the neck. Shoulders, back, knees, hips, hamstrings. A mask is the wrong shape for any of it, and if joint or muscle recovery is part of why you are interested, a mask does not address that at all.
  • Raw output. A good panel produces far more light than any mask, and delivers it across a much larger area at once.
  • Even coverage. Light from adjacent emitters overlaps as it travels, so coverage across a surface becomes more uniform with distance. A panel at a sensible distance lights a face more evenly than a mask sitting on it does.
  • Adjustability. You control the distance, which means you control the dose. A mask gives you one setting, which is whatever the manufacturer chose.
  • Household use. One panel can serve several people. A mask is a personal item.

If any of those matter to you, the rest of this article is unlikely to change your mind, and it probably shouldn't.


The number everyone compares, and the two things it leaves out

The comparison usually rests on irradiance, in mW/cm². Panels are quoted anywhere from around 60 to well over 150. Home masks are commonly described as sitting somewhere between 5 and 30.

Stated like that, it is not a contest. But two things sit underneath those figures, and both of them cut the same way.

The first is distance

Panel irradiance is always measured at a stated distance, usually six inches, because light spreads as it travels and the number is meaningless without one. Panel manufacturers are generally upfront about this. One buying guide from a panel company notes that a device delivering 100 mW/cm² at six inches might deliver only 25 at twelve. [2] Another observes that treating from twelve to eighteen inches away is the most common reason home users end up underdosing. [3]

Six inches from a panel is closer than most people sit, and closer still than most people can hold a face still for fifteen minutes.

The second is the instrument

This one is less widely known. Independent spectrometer testing of the five most-marketed panels found every one measuring between 33% and 57% below its advertised irradiance. The explanation offered is not fraud but instrumentation: a spectrometer reads only light within the therapeutic band, while the solar power meters most manufacturers use respond to a wider slice of the spectrum and read roughly twice as high. [3]

We should be careful with that finding. It comes from a review publication rather than a peer-reviewed journal, and it covers five devices rather than the category. But the mechanism it describes is real, and it applies to any brand quoting a number without saying how it was obtained. Including, as we discuss below, us.

Running the arithmetic for a face

Irradiance only becomes meaningful once you multiply it by time, which gives you the dose in J/cm². That calculation is the whole basis of comparing anything in this category, and we've set it out fully in our piece on power and dose.

So a well-made panel used properly, at the distance its specification assumes, delivers more to your face than a contact mask does. We are not going to pretend otherwise.

The gap appears when the panel is used the way people actually use it. At twelve inches the same session delivers roughly a third as much, and reaching the mask's dose would take around half an hour of sitting still in front of a bright light with your face held in one position.

None of which means more is better. Photobiomodulation follows a biphasic dose response, so the effect rises with dose to a point and then falls away. [4] The trial that produced the most relevant result we know of, a 31.6% reduction in periocular wrinkle volume in 137 women aged 40 to 65, used a dose well below all of the figures above. [5] The target is a sensible dose delivered consistently, not the largest number available.


The measurement problem, including ours

It would be convenient to level that criticism at panels and stop. We are not in a position to.

Our mask is specified at 45 mW/cm² measured at the skin surface, which is the only distance that means anything for a contact device, since nobody wears a mask six inches off their face. We publish it because most brands in our category publish nothing at all, and an unflattering number in context is more useful than silence.

What we cannot currently tell you is which instrument produced it, because that figure comes from our manufacturer rather than from independent testing we commissioned. If the concern raised about panel specifications applies across the industry, and we see no reason it would stop at panels, then it is a fair question to put to us as well. We are asking it, and we will publish what we are told.

Until then, the honest position is that our number was measured the way most numbers in this industry are measured, and you should weigh it accordingly.


Where masks lose

Two more things run against us, and they are worth understanding before you decide.

The first is evenness. Light from neighbouring emitters overlaps more the further it travels, which means coverage across a surface improves with distance. A mask sitting against the skin has not given the beams room to merge, so different zones of the face receive somewhat different doses. A panel at a sensible distance does not have this problem. Denser chip spacing, diffusion and a shell that follows facial contours all narrow the gap, but they do not close it, and any brand claiming perfect uniformity from a contact device is describing something optics does not offer.

The second is that a mask is a single-purpose object. If you are drawn to light therapy for recovery, sleep or joints as well as skin, you would be buying the wrong shape, and buying a mask first will not save you from buying a panel later.


The eye question, which panels make harder

A panel used on the face puts a bright source directly in your field of view for the length of the session. A mask does not, because it sits over the eye area.

The retina is considerably more light-sensitive than skin, and there is a published case report of photochemical retinopathy following blue LED mask use, whose authors concluded that eye exposure during these treatments warrants real caution. [6] That case involved a mask rather than a panel, and the lesson generalises: whichever device you choose, protect your eyes and follow the manufacturer's instructions rather than your instincts.

With a panel that means goggles, which most reputable panels supply. With a mask it means checking what the device does about the eye area before you buy, which is one of the seven specifications we would check on anything.

Which one, honestly

  • Buy a panel if you want to treat anything below the neck, if recovery or joints are part of the reason you are interested, if more than one person will use it, or if you are confident you will sit in front of it consistently.
  • Buy a mask if the face is the target, if you want blue or yellow modes as well as red, if you would rather not manage distance and goggles, or if you know from experience that a device requiring you to sit still will end up in a cupboard.
  • Buy neither yet if you do not know what you are treating. Persistent redness, new pigmentation or anything changing is a dermatologist question first.

Should you own both?

Plenty of people do, and there is no conflict between them. A panel for the body and a mask for the face is a coherent arrangement, and the mask is the cheaper half.

Is a red light therapy mask or a panel better?

Neither is better in general. A panel produces more light, treats the body as well as the face, and gives more even coverage at distance. A mask delivers a fixed dose to the face without you having to manage position or distance, and is easier to use consistently. If your target is below the neck, buy a panel. If it is your face and consistency is your constraint, buy a mask.

Can you use a red light therapy panel on your face?

Yes, and many people do. The two things to get right are distance and eye protection.
